Unfortunately, yesterday I was sick in bed with a stomach bug and unable to do much other than watch TV. While consuming all of my favorite sports shows, the main topic centered around racial issues in society and the recent protests and riots.
With multiple tragedies such as the George Floyd murder intensifying the discussions and stirring up layers of emotions, the sports world is leveraging their platform to speak out against hate and ignite change.
Multiple athletes have been outspoken about the injustices taking place and the need for action. The broadcasters and TV personalities I watched yesterday, brought up many important points with thought-provoking conversations. They also shared personal stories and perspectives that provided valuable insight.
Jim Rome’s radio/TV show opened their phone lines to listeners and allowed them to passionately share their own experiences of racism. Since I was down for the count, with little energy to talk, and nobody wanting to be around me, I spent the day just...listening.
I’ll admit, the day before, I felt pressure to post something impactful on social media and share my take on the racial issues. It seemed like everyone was getting their opinion out there and fast. But honestly, I was struggling with what to say. Then it hit me...I just needed to listen to others first.
I needed to listen to those who are educated and informed on the issues of racial inequality and injustice.
I needed to listen to my friends who have different experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives dealing with the issues.
I needed to listen to the full story before jumping to conclusions.
Most importantly, I needed to listen to the voice of God convicting and guiding me, and revealing ways to personally change and help.
I believe we have to stop being silent on institutional racism and perpetual hatred, but first, we must be willing to listen so we enhance our understanding. Our willingness to listen will then lead to more effective action.
With this in mind and the emotions we have swirling around today, the following two verses should affirm this approach:
"Understand this, my beloved brothers and sisters. Let everyone be quick to hear , slow to speak , slow to anger " (James 1:19; AMP).
"Be angry , yet do not sin; do not let your anger last until the sun goes down. And do not give the devil an opportunity ” (Ephesians 4:26-27; AMP).
As we move forward, let’s be active listeners who are slow to speak and then take informed and impactful action. Let's always keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and our hearts aligned with His will...to love God and love people.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, this world is very broken and You’re the One that heals. Please continue to change my heart, so I love people well. As I stand up against injustice and hate, teach me to be an active listener so I can have a greater impact. Thank you for Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
