NBA Draft Rumors & Lies

Published on June 23, 2016 | By
Tonight is the NBA Draft and the past few months have been filled with speculation. There are mock drafts, potential trades on the table, the media, agents, college coaches, and NBA scouts all providing information that factor into what might happen tonightimages Leading up to the actual draft, it’s hard to know what is true and what is misleading. Many of the players hear rumors about a particular team taking them or that they are one of the top picks. Unfortunately, many times it ends up being just a lie. Although fans have fun reading the rumors and mock drafts, it can be detrimental for players who enter the draft and forgo their college eligibility based on deceiving information. In our own lives, we encounter lies, rumors, and misleading information about politics, religion, current events, and even ourselves. Knowing what is true and who to believe has become very difficult. We have to ask ourselves, what voices are we listening to and where are we finding the truth? Are the lies we believe about ourselves and the world causing us to head in the wrong direction? On the other hand, are we testing what we hear or read from outside sources through the lens of God’s Word? Have we placed Scripture as the ultimate authority for truth and do we take it seriously? Sadly, many times even the Bible is misused and misquoted, and if we don’t know the Word and aren’t studying it for ourselves, we can be misled and end up buying into the lies of others. The Bible says in John 8:31-32 (ESV), So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” 2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT) also makes it clear: “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” As we hear rumors pop up about what might happen in tonight’s draft, let’s be reminded that the truth will be revealed when the commissioner steps to the podium to announce the picks. Let’s also remember that God’s Word is true, and the more we study it, the more our lives will reflect Truth. I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpackthat! PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us the Bible and providing us a way to understand what is true. I know that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, and as I follow Him I will be able to discern the lies in the world and hold onto the truth that is found in Your Word. Please give me the desire to study the Bible more, so I can have the strength and knowledge to resist the lies.
