The NFL is a quarterback-driven league and teams dream of getting a guy they can build their franchise around. However, one of the most under-appreciated elements to a successful quarterback and a winning franchise is having a trustworthy offensive line.

Having a unit that protects the quarterback from defensive attacks is crucial. Defenses strategize all week long to rattle the quarterback and take him out of the game. The job of the offensive line is to prevent defenders from getting to the prized QB.

Interestingly, at this point in the season, the teams who have allowed their QBs to be sacked the most (Luck, Dalton, Tannehill, Stafford, Newton, and Smith) only have one or two wins. Clearly these teams are struggling and aren’t giving their QB the protection that’s needed to dominate the opponent.

When it comes to our own lives, evil surrounds us and we face countless attacks each day. As followers of Jesus, we are constantly getting blitzed by the world and the enemy. We are “standing in the pocket” trying to do God’s will while our opponent is devising plans to take us down. The battle is real and we must take our need for protection seriously.

Thankfully, the Bible provides us hope and reminds us to stay protected daily by putting on the armor of God and taking advantage of the “blocking” He provides.

Ephesians 6:13-18 (NLT) says, “Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle, you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.

“For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.

“Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.”

NFL teams that place value on protecting their QB will succeed…and followers of Jesus who take the proper steps to protect themselves from attacks will thrive.

Today as we enter the world, let’s claim the truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation we have because of Jesus, and hold tightly to the Word of God in victory. I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that I need protection as I face evil in this world. Please cover me with Your armor, as I need Your truth and peace along with Your righteousness. Help me to understand and remember Your Word when I face attacks of all kinds. My hope is in You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
