Malcolm Butler became a Super Bowl hero for the New England Patriots when he intercepted Russell Wilson’s pass on the final play against the Seattle Seahawks a couple of years ago. Before Butler helped clinch the victory and became a Pro Bowl defensive back, he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Patriots.
Despite not being one of the team’s prized draft picks, he was able to legitimately compete for a roster spot and was given an opportunity to start. His story is a great example for future undrafted free agents to consider.
ESPN’s New England Patriots reporter, Mike Reiss, recently wrote, “Butler’s rise from undrafted free agent to Pro Bowler with the Patriots is reflective of an advantage the team has over others when it comes to recruiting undrafted free agents.”
This advantage leads to the top available undrafted players being drawn to New England for the chance to experience what Butler has already shown is possible. Malcolm Butler’s story shines a positive light on the Patriots, and his example adds to their attraction.
When we decide to give our lives to Jesus, we become an ambassador and example of what it looks like to make a commitment to God. How we live our life and the story being written about us hopefully becomes one that is attractive to future followers of Jesus.
They can see how we were transformed by God’s grace and power, so our lives become advantageous for someone to desire the same thing for themselves. If others see us as joyful, peaceful, and loving people, they will be drawn to us and ultimately drawn to God. They will know Jesus lives in us and through us.
Jesus says in Matthews 5:14-16 (NLT) “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
Our lives are a reflection of God’s work and glory. Let’s honor Him in the way we shine, and stand out to people because of our genuine love and faith. Let’s point others to Jesus by showing what it really means to follow Him. I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that!
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I pray my life would reflect Your great love and power. I pray I would bring honor and praise to You. Please show me how I can be a better representation of Jesus, so that others are drawn to Him. I pray that your continuing transformation of my heart and life would be attractive to those I meet. Thank you for Your grace and transforming love. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
