Head Coaches can struggle with knowing when to start an NFL rookie quarterback. Some QBs are more prepared than others, but over the past few years, teams have been throwing rookies on the field fairly quickly.

The Texans waited only a half before inserting Deshaun Watson, and now he’s filling up the stat sheet. The Cleveland Browns have rookie Deshone Kizer leading their offense, while the Chicago Bears have also made the switch to their first-year quarterback.

John Fox has named Mitchell Trubisky his starter for next Monday night’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. With the Bears 1-3 at this point, Fox feels it’s time to give the keys to their prized draft pick.

Chicago traded up in this year’s draft to take Trubisky No. 2 overall (giving up multiple draft picks to get him), and now he gets his chance to be “the guy.”

I can only imagine how excited Trubisky felt when called into Coach Fox’s office to be named the starter. That esteemed designation instantly gives him a voice in the huddle, more access to the coaches, more attention from the fans, and more questions from the media.

Trubisky will hopefully take full advantage of being named a starting NFL quarterback, and wont take this privileged opportunity lightly or for granted.

As a follower of Jesus, have you considered how amazing it is that the God of the universe names us His children and promotes us from death to life? We don’t ever want to take for granted that when we surrender our lives to Jesus, God calls us forgiven, free, redeemed, and an heir to Him.

Galatians 4:7 (NLT) declares, “Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are His child, God has made you His heir.”

Jesus gave up the splendor of heaven when God sent Him to earth to pay the ultimate price on the cross – all because we are His prized possession.

When we receive Jesus’ grace through faith, we join God’s family and are given the keys to eternity. We now have access to God, the Holy Spirit within us, and have been called a friend of Jesus.

John 1:12 (ESV) reveals, ”But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God…”

Romans 3:24 (NLT) tells us, “Yet God, in His grace, freely makes us right in His sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when He freed us from the penalty for our sins.”

When we’ve been “named a starter,” our old life is crucified with Christ and we’ve been justified and made new. What this designation provides us is limitless.

Ephesians 1:3 (NLT) says, “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.”

Today, let’s be filled with great thankfulness and joy that He named us “His guy,” and provides us remarkable access and opportunity to know Him and follow Him.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I pray I would place great value on You calling me a child. Thank you for considering me a prized possession in Christ – Your love is overwhelming! Please help me not to take the access I have to You and eternity, for granted. Thank you for sending Jesus. In His name I pray, Amen.
