Although most of us are fired up for Championship Weekend in college football, Tiger Woods has the amazing ability to shift the attention toward the golf course...even in December!
He’s in a select group of elite athletes whose peak greatness is unmatched, and many fans have missed him over the last few years. Fortunately the round he put together yesterday, and his start today, draw us in and give us hope that he might still have something left in the tank.
Before yesterday’s round at the Hero World Challenge, it had been 301 days since he played a competitive round of golf. Tiger had spinal fusion surgery in April, but shot his best 1st-round score since 2015 with a 3-under 69. He’s on the leaderboard, and even if he struggles the rest of the way, he still shows us glimpses of greatness.
There is no denying that sports fans, even beyond golf fans, are drawn to Tiger Woods when he’s competing and in contention. We’ve seen his superiority over the years, and know what the 14-time major champion is capable of.
As fans, we want to witness excellence in sports and we know that Tiger is able to provide that. Even though time has lapsed while suffering with recent injuries, we watch with anticipation that he can still wow us on the course.
While we think about our excitement over the splendor of sports, I can't help but wonder just how aware we are of God’s greatness. Do we acknowledge how amazing He truly is? Do we take Him for granted or stand in awe of His power, love, and grace? Do we allow ourselves to be drawn into His greatness?
Psalm 145:3 (ESV) proclaims, "Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable."
As followers of Jesus, we need to trust God’s greatness and believe He’s capable of anything...that He’s the best...and nobody can do what He can do. We wait in anticipation that He will wow us and answer prayers in ways that only He can.
Philippians 4:19 (ESV) declares, "And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus."
We serve a mighty and magnificent God, and we've been invited to partake in His power. Our ultimate worship and praise should be reserved for Him.
Deuteronomy 10:17 (ESV) reminds us, "For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe."
And Psalm 95:3 (ESV) affirms, "For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods."
This weekend as we’re reminded of Tiger Wood’s greatness as a golfer, and drawn to watch what he might do, let’s pause and remember what true greatness is. Let's lift our eyes to the maker of heaven and earth!
I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that!
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I admit I’m drawn to greatness, but I pray I would honor and glorify You above all else. You are worthy of my praise, awe, and worship. You are awesome and mighty and I thank you for allowing me to know You personally. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
