Remember last year when the Los Angeles Rams only lost three games during the regular season and made it all the way to the Super Bowl? Remember how they followed that up by starting the 2019 season 3-0?
Well, yesterday they lost 20-7 to the San Francisco 49ers and have dropped three games in a row. They have been out of sync, confusing, and lacking an identity.
The Rams lost two games by throwing the ball too much and not relying on the running game, and then yesterday they lost because they didn’t throw the ball hardly at all.
What’s going on with the offense, “genius” coach Sean McVay, and quarterback Jared Goff? We know they're capable of playing with much better rhythm and consistency, but will they be able to turn things around and get back on track?
Goff seems to think so, as he made this comment after yesterday’s loss:
“It’s a gut check. Are you who you say you are? I know this team is — I know these players are — I know these coaches are. We’ve got so much faith and belief in Sean and everyone else. We’re going to get right back on track, we’re going to do it, and, again, it takes a few plays here and there.
"We’ve seen it, we’ve done it, we’ve watched it on film, we know what we’re doing. We just need to be consistent with it and — play-in and play-out — stay focused and don’t let the little things slide.”
There's no question they have the players and coaches to get back on track, but it will require some humility, adjustments, and honest evaluation.
Likewise, many of us begin another week feeling out of sorts, confused, or on a losing streak. We’ve either lost momentum at work or our marriage seems out of rhythm or we’ve gotten off track with our pursuit of Jesus.
The first step is admitting we’re off track and remembering what it takes to get back rolling in the right direction. As Goff says, “we just need to be consistent with it and stay focused and don’t let the little things slide.”
It’s easy to get out of sync with our faith when we're inconsistent with our time in God’s Word or we’re missing fellowship with other believers or we’re pursuing selfish desires.
When this happens we have to examine our hearts, repent, make adjustments, and return to God and His wonderful rhythms of grace.
Lamentations 3:40 (ESV) says, "Let us test and examine our ways, and return to the Lord!”
1 John 1:9 (NLT) tells us, “...if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”
Finally, in James 4:8 (AMP) we're given this encouragement: “Come close to God and He will come close to you. sinners, get your soiled hands clean; wavering individuals with divided interests, and purify your hearts .”
Today, if we feel like we’re off track in one way or another, let’s remember God’s unending love and grace, and humbly surrender to His guidance as He points us back to His ways. Let’s end the losing streak and get back to being in step with Jesus.
