I love the idea of NFL teams going for two points instead of kicking an extra point after touchdowns, but in the past, a team making that choice anytime other than at the end of the game has been rare. However, there are a few players and coaches who are open to the idea of actually trying for a 2-point conversion after all touchdowns for this upcoming season. Saints QB, Drew Brees, says that he is all for it, and Steelers quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger commented, "I think we should go for it every time." Green Bay Packers’ head coach, Mike McCarthy, also seems very open to the 2-point conversion strategy. He recently said to ESPN, “Just because of the way we're built ... and the volume of which you would need to go the entire course of the year, I'm comfortable that we could attain that very easily. But I think you have to look at the whole picture, too." In the NBA, we are seeing the success of the Warriors shooting more 3s, and the NFL is realizing they have a great opportunity to score more points too - if they would just go for it! I must admit that sometimes I hold back and don’t always “go for 2” in my own life. The area that I personally struggle with is asking people to assist me or provide a need for me or go out of their way for me - only because I don’t ask. I hold back and make up excuses for why I’ll get denied, or I allow a fear of rejection to win out. I leave so many opportunities out there because I’m not willing to go for it and just ask. Unfortunately, I think many of us have a similar mentality when it comes to our prayer life and what we ask of God. We don’t always pray bold and risky prayers, but instead, we settle. We tell ourselves God doesn’t care about this or we don’t truly believe He’s powerful enough to move in a particular way. We miss out on many possibilities by not tapping into the God of the universe simply because we don’t ask. However, as followers of Jesus, we can cling to 1 John 5:13-15 (NIV): “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of Him.” As we approach the throne of God and begin to pray boldly, let’s remember that it’s still about His will and not all about our wants. But as NFL teams trust their star quarterbacks more and more to go for 2-point conversions, let’s open our hearts and trust our powerful God. Let’s ask Him with confidence to do amazing things in us and through us...and go for it! I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that! PRAYER: Heavenly Father, forgive me for holding back and not asking. I recognize by not asking, I’m not trusting and I’m letting fear win. Please help me to recognize the boldness and confidence I should have to approach You because of Jesus. I desire for my prayers to line up with Your will and please allow me to see Your glory shine through. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
