Kyler's Confidence By Steven Stack

Coming into the draft process, many questions surrounded NFL rookie QB, Kyler Murray - from his far less than ideal height to whether or not he was a capable leader.

Even as a rookie, we know that leadership is one of the crucial roles for a quarterback. After his interviews during the NFL Combine, Charlie Casserly of NFL Network reported that some teams denounced Kyler's leadership and study habits.

Casserly even went as far as to say the feedback he received from teams were “the worst comments I ever got on a high-rated quarterback.”

Although Casserly received a lot of pushback for these comments, many wondered if this would damage Kyler's draft status. However, fast forward three months and Murray is now working with his new team, the Arizona Cardinals who drafted him #1 overall.

In fact, Kyler's leadership abilities have apparently made quite an impression on everyone within the Cardinals organization.

Cards' linebacker and leader Chandler Jones said, “Kyler’s confident and he’s not a cocky player…he’s composed. I can see him getting guys together in the huddle, and as a young guy, that’s something that I admire about him.”

Future Hall of Fame wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald also made the comment, “No one knows the offense better than Kyler.”

Much of Kyler’s confidence comes from knowing who he is and understanding the offensive playbook. He has only played two preseason games so far and the results have been mixed, but he’s still adjusting. Remaining confident even when things aren’t going well is crucial for Kyler's success moving forward.

After their loss to the Raiders last week, Kyler said, “It gets frustrating, but it’s the preseason. We got to be better. Looking at the big picture, this isn’t a big deal.”

It would be easy for Kyler to dwell on the temporary setback or listen to the criticism, but instead, he remains confident and focused on the bigger picture.

Similarly to Kyler having confidence in his playbook and knowing who he is as a quarterback, as followers of Jesus, our confidence comes from a deep understanding of our “playbook” (the Bible) and who we are in Christ. We must recognize the bigger picture and place our hope in Him.

So, whether life is going well or we’re facing difficulties, here are five things in His playbook that should instill confidence in us as we live each day:

God says that we are chosen, a royal priesthood, holy and His own possession (1 Peter 2:9).

God is always with us so we don’t have to be afraid (Psalm 118:6).

The Lord is our helper (Hebrews 13:6).

His grace is sufficient for us and His power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

There’s absolutely nothing on earth or beyond that can separate us from His immense and perfect love for us (Romans 8:38-39).

Today, let’s walk in confidence...not rooted in ourselves, but in the incredible truth of who Jesus is and who we are because of His work on the cross!

I’m Steven Stack and you can UNPACK that!

PRAYER: Lord, thank you for graciously choosing to rescue, transform, and empower us to live for You so others can also join in Your beautiful family. Helps us to remember who we are and that all of our confidence comes from You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

Discussion Questions for PACKS:

  1. What is the difference between confidence and cockiness?

  2. Why is it important to have confidence and to find our confidence in Jesus each day?
