Listening to a Coach's Voice

It's the first day of March and we know the madness is right around the corner! Although there are tons of talented players to watch throughout the conference and NCAA tournaments, much of the focus lies on the many great coaches leading from the sidelines.

Coach K, Roy Williams, and John Calipari are always active throughout their games – calling out plays from the sidelines…encouraging their players…and pointing out things to keep an eye on. During timeouts, they challenge their players to make adjustments and remind them to remain calm and stay the course.

Whether a head coach yells loudly to his players across the court or speaks quietly to them on the sidelines, he’s coaching the entire time. It’s up to the players to decide if they listen.

In order for players to trust what the coach is saying and hear him above the noise, they must recognize his voice and realize it’s the one that matters most. They must know him and trust him while understanding he’s there to point out what they can’t see and ultimately direct them toward victory.

This kind of relationship can be compared to the one we have with God. As we try to navigate through life, God shows us His love and helps direct us toward victory. It’s up to us to listen and know His powerful voice above all the other noise around us.

Psalm 29:4 (NIV) tells us, “The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic.”

The more we know God and spend quality time with Him, the easier it becomes to discern His true voice and understand what He’s trying to say. He speaks in different ways to different people, but He’s always there reminding us to remain calm and stay the course.

Jesus says in John 10:27-28 (ESV), “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand.”

As followers of Jesus, we have a caring, active, and encouraging God who is ready and willing to lead us. Do we listen to what He tells us to look out for and where He shows us to go?

Whether He yells loudly from “across the court” or tries to pull us aside to whisper something important, today let’s take a timeout to hear the adjustments our “Coach” lovingly tells us to make.

I’m Bryce Johnson and you can UNPACK that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I pray I’d hear Your voice and truly listen and follow Your ways. I pray I would draw near and hear Your whisper. I realize the more I truly know You, the better I’ll know Your voice. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
