The Extra Pass

When the Golden State Warriors get hot (especially from the 3-point line), they are almost impossible to stop. Last night, the Cavs kept trying to get back in the game, but the Warriors always had an answer. Steph Curry led the way with 33 points and an NBA Finals record of nine 3’s. The Warriors took a 2-0 series lead with their 122-103 win last night. Of course, making baskets was important, but the passing is what really stood out. Curry had 8 assists, while Draymond Green and Kevin Durant each contributed 7. LeBron James was more of a facilitator for the Cavs and finished with 13 assists. During the game, ABC’s broadcaster Jeff Van Gundy made an observation about the importance of the second pass. He explained the value in a player not settling for a good shot, but rather passing it to a teammate for a great shot. The first shot is easy to take, but discipline and foresight are required to make the extra pass. A player has to see there is a better opportunity for a teammate, and another pass will provide the best chance to score.

Throughout the night, we saw easy dunks and open shots thanks to the right pass. As valuable as it is for a player to pass up a bad shot, or even a good shot in order to set up a great shot, a similar approach can be incorporated into our own lives.

There are times when opportunities are presented to us that may appear good but aren't the best. If we’re willing to pass and wait, God can provide something greater.

Unfortunately, all too often we can be selfish and impatient and take the first shot we get - instead of being wise and asking God to show us when to pass.

There are other situations where we have a choice to sin or pass and end up settling for a bad shot - instead of making the extra pass and trusting God’s way is better.

Every day we can decide to pass on something bad or even good in order to embrace God’s best for us. We don’t have to settle for the bad shot because Jesus tells us in John 10:10 (AMP), "….I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance .”

As we find our abundant life in Him and pass on what the world has to offer, we’ll obediently remain on the right path.

The Bible encourages us in 2 Timothy 2:15 (ESV), "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth."

Paul writes in Romans 16:19 (NLT), "But everyone knows that you are obedient to the Lord. This makes me very happy. I want you to be wise in doing right and to stay innocent of any wrong.”

Today, let’s not settle for the wrong shot but make the extra pass to what's best. When we choose Jesus, even though life is still tough, we can be assured of lots of wide open threes and countless easy dunks.

I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that!PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I know Your way is better than mine. Please help me not to settle for selfishness and show me how to pass on what the world offers in order to enjoy Your best. I pray this in Jesus' name Amen.
