The Philadelphia 76ers, one of the up and coming teams in the NBA, have high expectations for this season. After years of rebuilding, they now have a roster of young stars who made a strong run to the playoffs last season.
Although the team hopes to sustain their success, they still haven’t hired a new general manager since the dismissal of Bryan Colangelo in June.
Colangelo got caught up in a social media scandal that cost him his job, and the Sixers have taken their time to find their next permanent GM.
Philadelphia 76ers managing partner Josh Harris told ESPN, "We prefer to find an elite talent who can lead us, but we aren't going to compromise."
Since they have people temporarily sharing GM roles within the current front office, Harris explained, "We prefer to find someone, but we don't want to feel forced into compromising."
Although the Sixers are in a tough spot, I appreciate their patience and unwillingness to settle for a new GM. Keeping that in mind, I think we often find ourselves in situations when we can easily decide to compromise our faith and go against what we know is right.
How many times have we settled for less than God’s best by being impatient or getting caught up in the pressures around us? Too often we accept the world's standards rather than be obedient to God’s Word.
1 John 2:15-16 (AMP) tells us, “Do not love the world , nor the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
"For all that is in the world—the lust and sensual craving of the flesh and the lust and longing of the eyes and the boastful pride of life —these do not come from the Father, but are from the world.”
The truth is, genuine satisfaction...the abundant life...and lasting joy are found in Jesus. When we pursue the world instead, we compromise our ability to experience God’s best. We end up settling for idols and miss out on His fullness.
If we don’t want to lower our standards or accept less than all that God has for us, we must “...put to death and deprive of power the evil longings of your earthly body immorality, impurity, sinful passion, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry " (Colossians 3:5 - AMP).
Today, let's not "feel forced into compromising," but rather surrender to Jesus and enjoy the fruitful life available to us.
I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that!
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, help me not to settle for anything less than Your best. I desire to follow Jesus and Him alone. I pray I won't compromise what I know is right and ask that You help me remain obedient to Your Word. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
