With 2018 NBA Free Agency starting July 1st, all eyes are on Lebron James as he makes a decision the whole league is anticipating once again. Since being swept by the Golden State Warriors in the Finals, speculation of where he lands is smothering the media. Analyst after analyst contemplates a multitude of outcomes while making their own predictions on where he takes his talents next. Will he join the Lakers along with All-Star, Paul George? Will he team up with James Harden and Chris Paul on the Rockets? Or, will he join forces with another team in the Eastern Conference like the Wizards, Celtics or Sixers? Lebron James is a player who can transform even an average NBA team into a Finals contender. With his experience and scoring ability, any team is going to be thrilled to land the "king." As we get closer to free agency, NBA teams are preparing to make their offer to James - hoping to convince him to put on their jersey. Teams and organizations are beginning to put their Championship hopes in one player. If they can just land him, their chances to be a contender and legitimate top team are validated. In our own lives, we also place our hope in people delivering something to us...or legitimizing who we are...or giving us happiness, value, and worth. Maybe we depend on our spouse to give us validation. Or rely on our boss to decide whether or not we're successful. Although we put our hope in imperfect people, we expect them to be perfect and come through as our solution - or even as our "king." The reality is, other people will always let us down and won't live up to our expectations. However, Jesus, the King of the world and our Savior, offers us hope in Him so we'll never be disappointed. He offers to be enough when we struggle and experience turmoil in our lives. Christ has delivered us from sin and death by His sacrifice on the cross. “For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians5:21). Christ did for us what we could never do for ourselves. In view of that truth, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope" (Romans 15:13 - ESV). As the NBA waits for Lebron’s decision, let's be reminded to never put our hope in one single man unless that man is Jesus Christ...the deliverer of everlasting life. I'm Bennett Rutherford and you can unpack that! Prayer: Heavenly Father, I pray I would put my hope in You, and only You. Guard me against the expectation that other people are going to deliver my happiness and fulfillment. I place my trust in You...knowing You will bring me mercies unending. In Jesus' name, I pray, Amen.
