Who Are You Building Around?

The Fantasy Football season is quickly upon us, and the key to a Fantasy manager’s success is deciding who to build the team around and making sure to establish the proper foundation.

How well our top pick does during the season determines, in a significant way, whether or not we’ll have a winning team.

Who we select in the first round is usually the biggest decision Fantasy managers must make during a Fantasy draft. Fantasy analysts spend a reasonable amount of time discussing and recommending who to take in the first round, and we wrestle with who our top choices are, depending on where our draft pick is.

The reason our top selection is so important is that it dictates the rest of our decisions during the draft, as we consider his position and how many points we can count on from him.

Our team must have a reliable and productive cornerstone to build a Fantasy team that lasts and gets us into the playoffs. We are looking for someone who can provide our team with a solid foundation that can withstand challenges and injuries on our roster and truly thrive.

If we miss on our first pick and select the wrong player, then the foundation of our team is shaky, and we will struggle mightily.

As we think about the importance of our Fantasy team’s foundation and what players to build around, let’s also consider how this translates to our own lives. Who we “select to be first” in our lives will dictate the rest of the decisions we make.

So, what or who is our cornerstone? Is our life built on a solid or shaky foundation? Are we making temporary or eternal decisions? Are we building a life based on worldly accomplishments and pleasures that don’t last, or are we trusting Jesus Christ as our everlasting cornerstone?

Jesus explains the importance of a solid foundation in Matthew 7:24-27 (ESV): “Everyone then who hears these words of Mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.

“And everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Today, let’s take an honest look at what foundation we want our lives built upon. I hope we choose to stand on God’s Word, His will, and His love, and remember that Jesus is the cornerstone who guides us through the storms of life and into eternal life.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, please help me evaluate my life and reveal to me where I’m building a shaky foundation. I pray that my decisions and trust would be centered around Jesus so that I can have a strong foundation and withstand the challenges that are sure to come my way. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
